Hush Now, Baby tells how I grew out of an uneasy childhood in the segregated South…on the backbone of a black woman who loved me unabashedly. And I’m grateful.

I've been waiting to tell this story for 50 years! Soon after I was born, Eva Aiken joined my Lowcountry South Carolina family…and became the central figure in my life from then until the day I married.

This coming-of-age story pays homage to the Evas of our country--the long-delayed mourning and glorying of the host of African-American women whose physical strength and moral courage permeated the lives of Southern families.  Many children of the South are a product of those stalwart women who reared us as their own.

Hush Now, Baby is a tribute to Eva--and to all who have their own stories.
